About This Project

Thief is the electronic pop brainchild of PJ Wolf, who traded in his guitars for synthesizers, crafting a fresh minimalist sound that would embrace the aesthetic of contemporaries such as Metronomy, Miike Snow, Frank Ocean and N.E.R.D.

Hailing from sunny Sydney, Australia – Thief teamed up with renowned Brisbane based producer Matt Redlich (Emma Louise, Holy Holy, Trouble With Templeton) for the creation of the debut ‘Broken Boy’ and his debut EP – ‘Closer’.

As well as being shortlisted for the prestigious Vanda and Young songwriting competition for ‘Closer’, under his previous project PJ Wolf he also won Triple J’s Unearthed Top Song competition and was also a recipient of the Foundation for Young Australians Buzz Grant.

In late 2013 – Thief’s early demos found their way on to the internet and within weeks the blogosphere was alight with talk of this new Australian pop talent. Thief immediately garnered significant support for his debut single ‘Broken Boy’ and ‘Closer’ EP from Triple J:

‘Stupendous electro-pop with a heartfelt message’

Key international blog tastemakers such as Neon Gold, ATG, Kick Kick Snare, Earmilk and Indieshuffle followed suit, resulting in #1 Hype Machine Chart.

“Soul-stuffed with sinister hooks and dark, ominous synths, “Broken Boy” channels the most addictive parts of Clock Opera and Metronomy like their long lost brother from Down Under.” Neon Gold

With significant Triple J support across the two singles, he also found champions at international radio as well – with early spot play in the UK on Radio 1 and XFM over the last 6 months and solid support at college radio in the US from KEXP and KCRW.

Key Press followed suit with support from The Line Of Best Fit, This is Fake DIY and Musicweek Playlist, alongside The Guardians Paul Lester:

“a heady, intoxicating quality, sophisticated, superbly structured and expertly arranged … with a lightness of touch that is very Pharrell.” – The Guardian

With a huge praise and support from media, came a massive support from the fans resulting in a #3 on the Spotify Viral Chart, over 3 Million streaming plays and a Top 40 in the UK iTunes Electronic chart for the single ‘Closer‘.

Alongside his extraordinary rise in 2014, Thief has supported many key acts such as The Aston Shuffle, The Holidays & Miami Horror, and toured extensively in Australia and the US for SXSW in March, the UK for The Great Escape and in October he will head to NYC for CMJ and a US tour.
